INTERACT CLUBS

CAMPBELL High School Interact

Campbell High School Interact is in the process of reorganizing their club for this

year. Currently, we are looking for an assistant advisor to fill the void left by the

departure of Karen Chun. Normally this club meets on Wednesday’s at noon. Look

to future editions of “Leeward Youth” for updates on this club.

Kapolei High School Interact

Monday, is Registration day for Kapolei High School Interact. It will go in the H

building on the 2nd floor at 2 pm. A very large turnout is expected. If you want a

little excitement in your life, drop by the 2nd floor of H building in Kapolei High School

at 2 pm Monday afternoon. You will see hundreds of students trying to get into the

125 slots that will be available for membership into the most popular club on

campus. The Kapolei High School Interact Club. The H Bldg hallway during last

year’s “Interact Registration Day” formed a line of over 250 students!

Kapolei Interact is a no-nonsense club. In addition to making the meetings and

participating in the many on-going projects that this club offers, all members are

required to keep at least a 2.0 Grade Point Average. At mid year, all students who

fail to satisfactorily participate or maintain a 2.0 GPA are dropped.

Last year, after registration in the hall way many students were able to find seats in

the classroom. Many had to stand. This club has grown so much that now they

occupy the entire North End of H Building.  Following registration on Monday, the elected

officers of the board of directors will meet to discuss club business, the up coming General

Membership meetings, and the famous Initiation Meeting which will be held on August 28th

from 2 – 5 pm.  Last year this club won almost every award that could be given to a club.

Thanks to Merry Ifuku, Diana Okamura and Caroline Lee, this is the hottest club on campus.

Their secret: They do many projects, they have lots of fun and all members are

required to participate.

NANAKULI High School Interact

There will be a General Membership meeting on Monday, August 11th at 1:30 pm in

room E8. Our own Rotary Advisor Bili Young has been working very hard with her

alma mater in supporting both the Interact and Early Act Clubs of Nanakuli.

EARLY ACT CLUBS

Ilima Early ACT

The Ilima Early Act will be conducting their first club meeting in the next few weeks.

As Leeward Youth goes to press, plans are being made to combine a few clubs at

Ilima with our Early Act Club of Ilima Intermediate. Lydell Acosta has done an

outstanding job with this club. That is why it is so popular that others want to join.

Kapolei Early ACT

Tuesday will be the big day. On August 12th, Kapolei Early Act will have its first

Registration meeting. Through signs, handouts, word of mouth, and close circuit TV

announcements, Michele Bright has generated a lot of interest in this club and we

are expecting a large turnout.

Our Nanakuli Interact Advisor, Michelle Murray, has been working with Michele Bright

at Kapolei Middle School. Michelle and Michele have been organizing and developing

the Kapolei Middle School Early Act Club. This is a huge undertaking because Kapolei

Middle School is on a “Track System.”

Talk about dedication. The following picture was taken early Sunday morning on,

July 27th as both advisors worked on the many details required to get a club started.

What a beautiful example of the dedication and cooperative effort of our great

advisors we have on the Leeward coast.

NANAKULI Early ACT

Details will be forthcoming on our first General Membership meeting of this school

year. We are still in the process of designating a new Advisor to this club.

ROTARY CLUB OF KAPOLEI

Youth Exchange

Last Monday morning when you woke up to go to work, 16-year-old Rotary Youth

Exchange student Emilia Andrea Parraguez Sanchez left her home in Volcan Osorno,

high in the Chilean Andes, for the very first time. She had never seen the inside of

an airplane. Her village does not even have an airport. She traveled some 5,000

miles due north to Atlanta, Georgia, then another 5,000 miles (6 time zones) west to

Hawaii. The journey took her 40 hours, without sleep. She landed at Honolulu

International Airport at 8:40 Tuesday night and received a warm “Kapolei Welcome”

from our Kapolei Rotary Greeting Committee.

Our gang was there early, in good spirits and ready to meet her. Every time we get

together we have a ball. Having fun is a requirement for our club.

On Thursday morning, Emilia attended her first of many meetings to come of the

Rotary Club of Kapolei.

Emilia will be attending Kapolei High School beginning Monday, August 11th. Aside

from a full curriculum in the Arts and Sciences, Emilia will be joining the Kapolei

Interact Club.  Emilia will also be trying out for the Kapolei Girls Tennis Team.

The support from our club is outstanding. Rotary Club member Sana Poma has a

16-year-old daughter who attends Kapolei High School. Sana has volunteered to

pickup Emilia daily and take her to school with her daughter.

Many other Rotarians will be working and visiting with Emilia to give her the greatest

experience ever!

While in Hawaii Emilia will be staying with the host families of Dan and Maria

Fullenwider, and; Greg and Rhona Slingerland. Emilia will be attending her junior

year at Kapolei and will be returning to her home town in Rancagua, Chile next

summer with life time memories of Hawaii and her Ohana.

The Rotary Club of Kapolei will be hosting a huge Welcoming Party for Emilia on

August 23rd at the Arbors in Ewa Beach.  Look for future articles on this young lady. She is

quite a student. By 15 she was already in the top 1% of her class and had finished Algebra,

Biology and Physics with straight A’s. She is a very adventurous over-achiever. Her #1 goal

is to learn to speak English and she is off to a great start.  Emilia represents the first Youth

Exchange student hosted by a Leeward Oahu Rotary Club and we are honored to have

Emilia in our Ohana.
